How Does CPI Inflation Data Affect Forex, Gold and Stocks?
CPI (Consumer Price Index) measures how fast consumer prices are rising. A higher-than-expected US CPI usually strengthens the US dollar and weighs on gold and stocks, because it makes Federal Reserve rate cuts less likely (or hikes more likely). A lower-than-expected reading usually does the opposite.
What is CPI?
The Consumer Price Index tracks the price of a typical basket of goods and services — food, energy, rent, transport, healthcare and more. The percentage change in that basket is the most widely quoted measure of inflation.
- Headline CPI includes everything.
- Core CPI excludes food and energy, which are volatile. Central banks and markets often care more about core, because it shows the underlying trend.
- m/m vs y/y: the month-on-month change shows momentum; the year-on-year change is the familiar “inflation rate”.
When is US CPI released?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes CPI monthly, usually around the middle of the month, at 8:30 a.m. New York time (12:30 UTC during US daylight saving time, 13:30 UTC otherwise). Other countries publish their own CPI — the UK, eurozone, Australia, Canada and Japan releases all move their currencies. The economic calendar lists them all with forecasts.
Why does CPI move markets?
Central banks raise interest rates to fight inflation and cut them when inflation is under control. The US Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation over time. So every CPI print changes what traders expect the Fed to do next — and interest-rate expectations drive currencies.
| Market | CPI hotter than forecast | CPI cooler than forecast |
|---|---|---|
| US dollar | Up | Down |
| US bond yields | Up | Down |
| Gold | Usually down | Usually up |
| Stocks (especially tech) | Usually down | Usually up |
| Bitcoin | Often down | Often up |
Isn’t gold an inflation hedge? Why would it fall on high CPI?
Over the long run gold can protect purchasing power, but on the day of a CPI release the short-term driver is usually real interest rates. A hot CPI print makes the Fed more likely to keep rates high, which lifts yields and the dollar — both of which tend to push gold down in the short term.
How to read a CPI release on the calendar
Compare the actual with the forecast (consensus). Even a tenth of a percentage point matters. A print that matches the forecast often produces little lasting move, because it is already “priced in”. Our guide to reading an economic calendar explains actual, forecast and previous in detail.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CPI and core CPI?
Headline CPI includes all items in the basket. Core CPI excludes food and energy prices because they swing a lot, so it gives a clearer view of the underlying inflation trend.
Is high CPI good or bad for the US dollar?
In the short term, higher-than-expected CPI is usually positive for the dollar because it makes higher US interest rates more likely.
What time is US CPI released?
At 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, usually around the middle of the month — 12:30 UTC during US daylight saving time and 13:30 UTC otherwise.
Does CPI affect crypto?
Often, yes. Bitcoin and other crypto-assets have tended to react to changes in interest-rate expectations, so a surprise CPI print can move them along with stocks.
