What Is a Pip in Forex? How to Calculate Pip Value
A pip is the standard unit for measuring how much a currency pair’s price moves. For most pairs it is the fourth decimal place (0.0001); for Japanese-yen pairs it is the second decimal place (0.01). On a standard lot of 100,000 units of EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10.
What does “pip” stand for?
“Pip” is usually short for percentage in point or price interest point. Whatever the origin, it means the same thing everywhere: the smallest standard step a quoted exchange rate takes. If EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1025, it has moved 25 pips.
How big is a pip for different pairs?
| Pair type | Example | 1 pip |
|---|---|---|
| Most pairs | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD | 0.0001 |
| Japanese yen pairs | USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY | 0.01 |
| Gold (XAU/USD)* | Gold vs US dollar | Often quoted as 0.10 or 0.01 — check your broker |
*Metals and indices don’t have a universal pip size. Brokers define their own “point”, so always check the contract specification before calculating risk.
What is a pipette?
Many brokers quote one extra decimal place: EUR/USD at 1.10253 instead of 1.1025. That fifth digit is a pipette, or fractional pip — one tenth of a pip. A move from 1.10250 to 1.10253 is 3 pipettes, or 0.3 pips.
How do you calculate pip value?
The pip value tells you how much money you make or lose for each one-pip move. The general formula is:
Pip value = units traded × pip size × (value of one unit of the quote currency in your account currency)
Lot sizes in forex are standardised:
- Standard lot = 100,000 units
- Mini lot = 10,000 units
- Micro lot = 1,000 units
Example 1: EUR/USD (USD account)
The quote currency is already USD, so: 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 per pip for a standard lot, $1 for a mini lot and $0.10 for a micro lot.
Example 2: USD/JPY at 150.00 (USD account)
One pip is 0.01 yen. For a standard lot: 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000 per pip. Convert to dollars by dividing by the rate: ¥1,000 ÷ 150 = about $6.67 per pip. Because the pip value is in yen, its dollar value changes as USD/JPY moves.
Example 3: EUR/GBP (USD account)
One pip on a standard lot is £10 (the quote currency is GBP). If GBP/USD is 1.30, that is £10 × 1.30 = $13 per pip.
Why pip value matters for risk
Pip value is the bridge between your stop-loss distance and the money you actually risk. If your stop is 30 pips away and you trade one standard lot of EUR/USD, you are risking 30 × $10 = $300. Professional traders size positions backwards from that number: decide the dollar risk first, then choose the lot size that fits.

Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 pip worth?
It depends on the pair and the trade size. On EUR/USD and other pairs quoted in US dollars, one pip is worth $10 per standard lot (100,000 units), $1 per mini lot and $0.10 per micro lot. For other pairs, convert the quote-currency value into your account currency.
How many pips is 1.1000 to 1.1050?
That is a 50-pip move, because each 0.0001 change is one pip on a pair like EUR/USD.
Is a pip the same as a point?
Not always. In forex a pip is a fixed decimal place, while “point” is often used by brokers for the smallest price increment of indices, metals or a fractional pip. Always check your broker’s contract specifications.
Why are yen pairs different?
The yen has a much lower value per unit than currencies such as the dollar or euro, so yen pairs are quoted with two decimal places instead of four. A pip on USD/JPY is therefore 0.01 rather than 0.0001.
