Forex Market Hours: The Best Time to Trade Forex (Every Time Zone)
The forex market is open 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening (UTC). The busiest and most liquid time is the London–New York overlap: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. New York time, which is 13:00–17:00 UTC in the northern winter and 12:00–16:00 UTC in summer. Spreads are usually tightest and moves largest then.
Why does forex trade 24 hours a day?
There is no single central exchange for currencies. Banks, brokers and funds trade with each other around the world, so as one financial centre closes, another opens. Trading begins when Sydney opens on Monday morning local time (Sunday evening UTC) and ends when New York closes on Friday afternoon.
Forex session times in UTC
Each session is roughly 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. in its own city. In UTC the times shift by an hour when Europe, the US and Australia change their clocks for daylight saving. “Winter” below means the northern winter (roughly November to March); “summer” roughly late March to October.
| Session | Local hours | Northern winter (UTC) | Northern summer (UTC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 08:00–17:00 Sydney | 21:00–06:00 | 22:00–07:00 |
| Tokyo | 09:00–18:00 Tokyo | 00:00–09:00 | 00:00–09:00 |
| London | 08:00–17:00 London | 08:00–17:00 | 07:00–16:00 |
| New York | 08:00–17:00 New York | 13:00–22:00 | 12:00–21:00 |

| City | Northern winter | Northern summer |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 08:00–12:00 | 08:00–12:00 |
| London | 13:00–17:00 | 13:00–17:00 |
| Frankfurt / Paris | 14:00–18:00 | 14:00–18:00 |
| Dubai | 17:00–21:00 | 16:00–20:00 |
| Singapore / Hong Kong | 21:00–01:00 | 20:00–00:00 |
| Sydney | 00:00–04:00 (AEDT) | 22:00–02:00 (AEST) |
Session hours are conventions, not official opening bells, so different sources quote slightly different times. Sydney’s hours move in the opposite direction because Australia’s daylight saving runs during the northern winter.
What is the best time to trade forex?
For most traders, the London–New York overlap is the most active window. London and New York together account for well over half of global currency turnover, so when both are open you typically get the deepest liquidity, the tightest spreads and the biggest moves — especially in EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/CHF.
Other useful windows:
- The London open (07:00–09:00 UTC): often sets the tone for the day as European traders react to overnight news.
- The Tokyo session: better for JPY and AUD/NZD pairs; often quieter and more range-bound for EUR and GBP pairs.
- Scheduled news releases: US data such as payrolls and CPI usually comes out at 8:30 a.m. New York time, during the overlap. Check the economic calendar before you trade.
When should you avoid trading?
- The weekly open and close. Liquidity is thin late on Friday and when markets reopen on Sunday, and prices can “gap”.
- Around rollover (about 21:00–22:00 UTC), when many brokers widen spreads.
- Major holidays, when one of the big centres is closed.
- The seconds around high-impact news, unless trading news is your strategy — spreads can widen sharply.
Does the best time depend on the pair?
Yes. A pair is usually most active when the markets of both its currencies are open. GBP/USD is busiest in the London–New York overlap; USD/JPY is active in both Tokyo and New York; AUD/JPY often moves most in the Asian session.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the forex market open on Monday?
The trading week starts on Sunday at about 5:00 p.m. New York time — 22:00 UTC in the northern winter and 21:00 UTC in summer — when the Sydney and Wellington sessions begin. That is already Monday morning in Asia and Australia.
What is the best time to trade forex in my time zone?
For most pairs, trade the London–New York overlap: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. New York time, which is 13:00–17:00 UTC in winter and 12:00–16:00 UTC in summer. Convert from UTC to your local time; JPY and AUD pairs are also active during the Tokyo session, 00:00–09:00 UTC.
Is forex open on weekends?
No. The main market closes on Friday evening (New York time) and reopens on Sunday evening UTC. Some brokers offer limited weekend quotes, but liquidity is very thin.
Which forex session is the most volatile?
The London session, and especially its overlap with New York, usually sees the largest volume and price movement.
