What Does Long and Short Mean in Trading?
Going long means buying an asset because you expect its price to rise; going short means selling it because you expect the price to fall, then buying it back cheaper. In forex and CFDs, going short is as simple as pressing “sell”; in stocks and spot crypto it usually requires borrowing or a derivative.
Key facts
- Long
- buy first, profit if price rises
- Short
- sell first, profit if price falls
- Long risk
- limited to the price falling to zero (without leverage)
- Short risk
- theoretically unlimited — price can keep rising
- Forex
- every trade is long one currency and short the other
Long positions
A long position is the familiar “buy low, sell high”. If you buy gold at $2,400 and sell at $2,450, you make $50 per ounce. Being “long EUR/USD” means you have bought euros against dollars.
Short positions
A short position reverses the order: sell first, buy back later. If you short gold at $2,450 and buy back at $2,400, you make $50 per ounce. In stock markets this traditionally means borrowing shares to sell; with CFDs, futures and forex you simply open a sell position.
In forex, you are always both
Every currency trade is long one currency and short another. Buying EUR/USD is long euros and short dollars; selling USD/JPY is short dollars and long yen. This is why swaps can be positive or negative depending on which currency you hold.
Risks of shorting
- A long position’s loss is limited to the asset falling to zero; a short position’s loss has no ceiling, because price can keep rising.
- Short squeezes: when many traders are short and price rises, forced buying can make it rise faster.
- Shorting stocks can involve borrowing fees and dividend payments.
Always use a stop-loss — see where to place a stop-loss.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make money when prices fall?
Yes, by going short — selling first and buying back at a lower price. In forex, CFDs and futures this is done with a sell order.
Is shorting riskier than going long?
Usually, because a rising price has no upper limit, so losses on a short are theoretically unlimited unless you use a stop-loss.
What does it mean to be long USD/JPY?
You have bought dollars and sold yen, so you profit if USD/JPY rises.
